Week 6-Progress Week II

1. On thursday night i wrote down all the homework i had for the following week in my planner, and i focused on completing each assignment one night before. I didn't have much work to do this week so it was a good time to stop procrastinating without being tempted to put it all off since it was simple work. I'm pretty surprised at how it easy it was for me to do my work one day in advance and it did help me with my sleeping patterns/time management. I feel like my behavior is changing and i prefer this schedule and planning over my procrastination. All of my homework was due today, so i completed it yesterday, sticking to my original plan. The only work that i have left for this week is the field experiment and my human trafficking paper. I decided that i will work on my experiment all day tomorrow (completing at least half) and whatever i don't get done i will finish by friday night (because i'm at school all day on thursdays). Regarding my human trafficking paper, i will complete it tomorrow and practice presenting until saturday. Because i did complete my work, i kind of rewarded myself by going out tonight, plus it's a holiday tomorrow so NO SCHOOL :)
2. By changing my positive reinforcement to a positive punishment, it gave me a lot of motivation to change my behavior. I would hate not being able to go out on the weekends, especially since this weekend is the conference and it would be nice to celebrate afterwards. When i feel like putting my work off, i remind myself that working hard now will lead to having more fun on the weekend. I would have no excuses to procrastinate since i wasn't overloaded with homework this week and i would be so mad at myself if i didn't get my work done because i was too lazy.
3. I feel like the changes i made to the program have worked, especially my negative punishment. Instead of aiming too high, i focused on just getting my work done one day in advance, because a gradual change will lead to a lifelong behavioral change. I've already planned out most of the following week, and since i did so well this week it shouldn't be a problem.
a. The last website that i posted offered great advice, which i used while writing my human trafficking paper, think of the freedom you will have when you're done. Keeping that mentality helps you get through hard projects, instead of being miserable and making things worse.

This website offers the same advice, but i found it funny that step six says to involve others. I don't like to involve others with my troubles, but i guess if i really wanted to i could involve someone i trusted, to make sure i stick to my plans.

  1. Hey Christin
Like you I have begun to think to myself that getting my work done NOW will provide more freedom later, not only the freedom of not having homework, but the freedom from the emotional burden of knowing I have homework. However personally it is not enough as I have been procrastinating several papers, however looking at your system, I might follow a plan like you have. Thank you for your help and good luck with the rest of your behavior change.

  2. Are you sure you rewarded yourself with going out on tuesday night? haha. We didnt even do anything! Anyways...i'm glad to see your program is working and that your slowly changing your ways. Although the night before to me is still pretty late, I admit i still do that a few times.

The reason i do this is so that i not only have free time (yea, right) but i can focus on other things. Like contemplating what i should have for dinner, instead of eating anything near you or not eating at all. Even though i dont have a social life, i feel very content knowing that all my work is done, even though it never is. still gotta do apps.

Dont worry, we will still hang out regardless if i get accepted or not. I really never expected friends with my experience at mtsac, but now that those walls have been broken down. I feel much more comfortable with being a mountie. go mtsac!

If you want to push back procrastinating even more, you could do hw anytime you have free time and/or bored.

  3. Hey,
you know it is true about getting other involved because if you want to do everything in your own, you may not be as succesful as when you have help.
The other thinking person can provide you with ideas and tips that you may not be able to think of yet, I strongly recommend you to get help. It was nice that you could do all your work on time and get rewarded because of that.
Keep it up with the good work.
P.S. Congrats for your presentation!!!! It was so cool that you were represented Mt SAC

  4. Hey Christin!

I love how you're beginning to implement the planner into your plan. Hopefully, this will work because what happens to me is that after a small while, I begin to neglect my planner and then all of a sudden I have all these blank pages of nothing in my planner. I hope you have better control as well as initiative than me! Anyway, congrats on your presentation at the conference, with what I'm reading you actually got in practice so its good how you managed your time along with your priorities!

    goodluck!

  5. Hi Christin! Great Human Trafficking Presentation! I am happy you have been improving! That takes a whole lot of discipline I am really proud of you. :) Your advice really helped me this week. I actually used it to change my program. With regards to procrastinating, I think it is my problem sometimes too. But really, a planner helps, keep using it. I suggest you make you planner really nice, like scrapbookish if you want even. I like doing this because it motivates me to plan my week well, look at the great things about life and feel happy accomplishing something. Use stickers in your planner and pictures to make it fun. :) Also for bug projects try scheduling that a week in advance so you have time to look back on it. See you around! take care!

  6. It sounds like you are doing really well Christin. Procrastination seems like it can be one of the hardest things to change but it sounds like you are definitely on the way to making a life long change like you said! Maybe I will try managing my schedule a little better too!
